Parkway eye Grand Slam Finish

Parkway v Sholing | Match Preview

By Jack Hobbs

Chris McPhee is keen for Plymouth Parkway to get revenge on a Sholing side who inflicted late heartbreak on the Yellows back in December.

Going into added time 1-0 up, Parkway suffered late heartbreak conceding two quick goals to lose all three points.

The Yellows sit 13th in the table on 47 points, just two places and one point behind Sholing in 11th. A win for both teams would almost certainly ensure survival in the division.

Speaking on Saturday’s game, McPhee said: “It’s a big game and a big three points to fight for, for several different reasons”

“Firstly, Sholing beat us in the previous fixture, up at their place in really uncomfortable, and disappointing for circumstances which really hurt us as a team.

“Going into added time, one nil up and losing the game 2-1 was really hard to take, especially with the amount of energy and effort the boys put into the game. We just let the game slip through our fingers.

“That’s one of the reasons that we’re desperate to set the record straight and get the result on Saturday. Also, we’ve not mathematically secured our spot in the league for next season, so we’re desperate to try and do that. Three points on Saturday will really help us.

“Lastly, obviously we’ve won the last two games back-to-back. We want to keep the good run rocking and rolling. We want to pick up three points, we want to continue to perform well right the way through to the to the last knockings of the season.

“It’s just maintaining that momentum, making sure that we finish this season as strongly as we can to give ourselves a chance of finishing as high as possible in the league.

“It’s a big game for us and we know the opposition are going to be a decent side. They’re going to be physical and they’re going to be athletic. We know that they’re going to look to play a little bit as well

“They’ve also a big goal threat who has scored a lot of goals this season so we’re going to have to match their work rate, match their energy, and show that little bit of quality ourselves.”

Parkway secured a tight 0-1 away win at Winchester City last Saturday thanks to a header from Rio Garside and McPhee is hoping his side can kick on and improve further on their victorious performance.

“I felt last Saturday that we didn’t show our quality quite so much”, said the 41-year-old.

“When we got into attacking areas, we were really good building through our defensive third, into that midfield third, but when we got to those good areas, we didn’t put the best of crosses in, and we weren’t as clean with our kind of cross or our final ball meaning we didn’t create as much as we have done in previous weeks.

“Despite this, we came away with the result after a relatively good performance and controlling the game for large parts. It’s a case of making sure that come Saturday, we are a little bit tidier with that transition into the final third and being able to create a lot more opportunities for our boys – hopefully we put one or two in the back of the net.”

Football aside, McPhee’s wife Susie is running the London Marathon at the end of April and is raising money for their 15-year-old daughter was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of three.

“She’s applied to run for the London Marathon for many a year now and never had the opportunity or been granted the place, but this year it came up”, said the Parkway bpss.

“My daughter was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of three and ever since we’ve been struggling day in day out, looking after her, educating ourselves, and trying to keep on top of a really relentless disease.

“It’s something that has caused a lot of problems for our daughter and for us as a family. We’ve always tried to support charities and especially ones that are close to our heart, and it’s an opportunity for us to do that now that she’s got that place.

“We’re asking people left, right and center, different walks of our lives, at work, friends, family, to try and raise just over 2000 pounds if we possibly can. We’re on our way to doing that, but we would really like to break that before she goes on the run at the end of the month.

“She’s been training unbelievably hard, running a hell of a lot of miles over the last six weeks or so and as she’s come home some evenings really sore and exhausted from her training, but she’s been unbelievable.

“She’s really working hard; I’m amazed by her strength of determination and willingness.

“It’s all for a good cause and it supports a charity that we hope that within the next five or 10 years there, can find a cure for type one diabetes.”
