Plymouth Parkway welcomed National League South Worthing to Bolitho Park for this history making FA Cup 4Q round tie. This was the first time Parkway had reached this stage and knew victory would see them progress to the first round proper where League 1 and 2 clubs enter.

With no Plymouth Argyle or Premier League distractions and the weather being fine, a bumper crowd of 1203 attended, this being Parkways third highest crowd for a competitive match.

This was the first encounter between Parkway and Worthing although they have visited Bolitho before to play then tenants Truro City.  Worthing currently sit in 10th place in National South although they are expected to feature in the promotion shake-up and have only played three of their ten matches at home so far due to the erection of a new stand and sit two points outside the play-off places.

Parkway saw three changes from last week’s FA Trophy victory over Banbury United with ex Parkway loanee Harry Lee joining on a month’s loan from Exeter City and playing in goal in place of Ewan Griffiths who was called up by Wales U19 squad. Joe Wragg and Carlo Garside replaced Mikey Williams who picked up an injury last week and dropped to the bench, and captain Shane White who was unavailable. Ryan Brett took the captains armband. Worthing were unchanged from their 1-0 league victory on Tuesday at home to Welling United.

Full Match Report

A quiet start to the match before in the fourth minute a promising attack down the left by Mitch Beardmore where his cross was easily dealt with when he may have been better shooting.

On ten minutes Worthing won the first corner of the game when an attack down the left by Glen Rea was intercepted but the corner was well defended.

The first shot of the match came in the 14th minute when Ryan Brett played in Matt Wright who headed on to Joe Wragg only for his shot to slide by the left-hand post from 15 yards and was never troubling Worthing keeper Chris Haigh.

Matt Wright picked up an unfortunate injury on 18 minutes and was replaced by James Watts-Barciela. With fans favourite Jack Crago being released earlier in the week to Helston Athletic, there were not too many attacking options.

On 20 minutes a promising surge down the left saw Wragg play in Dylan Jones who was bearing down on goal but flagged for offside. Shortly after, Woking had their first shot on 22 minutes by their lofty number 9 Mo Faal but his effort from 25 yards was easily gathered by Lee,

On 26 minutes, Worthing came close to opening the scoring when Callum Hall was dispossessed in midfield and Nicky Wheeler worked an opportunity for himself and a strong shot was glanced away by the head of Taylor Scarff for a corner which was comfortably defended.

Although Worthing were now getting on top after an even first 20 minutes, Callum Hall broke away on 30 minutes and his 20 yard effort took a deflection which saw Haigh gather the ball at his second attempt. Within a minute however, Worthing took the lead. Playmaker Danny Cashman slotted in Mo Faal and from the left side of the penalty area, he cooly finished with his left foot low down inside the far post leaving Lee no chance.

On 35 minutes following a corner, Glen Rea powered in a goal-bound shot inside the box which hit Scarff fully in the face with the follow up also being blocked. Worthing were now well in control and there was little threat from Parkway. The neat and tidy passages of play of the visitors were matched by Parkway for 20 minutes but the goal had knocked Parkway out of their stride and their passing became wayward. Dylan Jones being our main hope of a goal was too often helping the defence.

Good interchange between Nicky Wheeler and Danny Cashman on 41 minutes after Hall was relieved of the ball on halfway led to a good opportunity cut out for a corner by Carlo Garside with the corner resulting in a header by Spong just wide of the target. The three added minutes seen the first caution awarded to visiting Glen Rea for a foul on Callum Hall.

Worthing began the second half as they finished the first and Mo Faal had an effort blocked on 47 minutes when well set. Shortly after, a foul by Dylan Jones just outside the right-hand corner of the penalty box led to a very soft second goal for Worthing. Jack Spong scored direct from the free kick just inside the near post. A cross was probably expected but this was the sixth time this season Spong had scored a direct free kick. Had Harry Lee and the defence knew this, they would surely have been expecting a shot and dealt with it.

On 54 minutes, Dylan Jones looked as if he had broken free in the middle of the park but a foul by Joe Cook resulted in a booking. Callum Hall was booked on 56 stopping a dangerous looking attack and the free kick was blocked by the wall.

On the hour, Cashman, who had caused problems for the hosts all day, had an audacious attempt just wide of the post. Immediately after was Parkways first real chance of the match when James Watts-Barciela broke from 40 yards out shooting from just inside the box and forcing a good diving save from Haigh when bound for the corner of the net.

On 65 minutes the game was effectively ended when good interaction on the left between Nicky Wheeler and Mo Faal saw Faal drive into the box and should have been tracked by Scarff but was left to tuck it away in the far right corner for his second. Faal had done his work and was immediately substituted by Harrison Smith.

Following a yellow card for Dylan Jones, on 69 minutes a double substitution by Parkway saw the introduction of Gene Price and Mikey Williams for Carlo Garside and Joe Wragg.

Harrison Smith nearly made an immediate impact for Worthing but blazed over the bar on 71 minutes when well set. On 73 minutes Birthday boy Ollie Starkey replaced Nicky Wheeler.

On 75 minutes Rio Garside was seemingly brought down in the box, but nothing was given and the resulting altercation saw yellow for both Garside and Joel Collbran for the visitors. More changes followed with Koerner on for Hall, and a double substitution for Worthing saw Tommy Willard and Kane Williams on for Glen Rea and Jack Spong.

On 79 minutes Lee had to be alert racing out of his box to head clear. Jack Wadham was then replaced by Jack Bates for the visitors’ final change. On 83, a Mitch Beardmore break saw his 25 yard effort deflected for a corner. Play then returned to the other end where Starkey cut in from the left with his low shot hitting the side netting. Worthing were now pushing for a fourth.

On 89 minutes Joe Cook done well to win the ball high up the field before slipping it through to Cashman who in turn played in Harrison Smith for a fine finish for his first goal for the club. Parkway then made their final substitution when Rio was replaced by the lively Portuguese Evandro Belo-Flores for his debut.

The five minutes of added time soon elapsed, and Parkway will be disappointed with their performance against a very neat and tidy opponent with the 0-4 scoreline being a fair reflection of the match. Worthing’s’ finishing was very clinical all day but they dominated possession and territory throughout.

Parkway will be pleased with the £14,375 FA Cup prize money they have accumulated this season with just one away tie in the process but must now quickly focus on title favourites AFC Totton who are the visitors on Tuesday when we return to league action.
