There were two fresh at Bolitho with midfielder Liam Oakes and winger Kieran Wilson joining on work experience loans from Exeter City.
Liam Oakes went straight into Chris McPhee’s XI replacing Alfie Cunningham, and Luke McCormick stepped up to fill the boots of the suspended Matt Wonnacott. The Yellows were without Matthew Wright who picked up a knock in the win over Marlow, alongside the suspended Callum Hall and Carlo Garside.
The Geordies made one change to the team which drew with Tiverton Town on Saturday, with Taylor Miles replacing Rod Orlando-Young.
Following Parkway’s recent run of good form, many were hoping for the run to continue against a Hanwell side with just one win in their previous nine league games.
However the early warnings signs in the game begged to differ as the London side started on the attacking foot and could have taken the lead within the opening five minutes.
Joseph Waight whipped a ball in from the left-hand side to Jordan Edwards whose goalward shot rebounded into the path of Roberto Nditi on the right-hand side of the six-yard box, but the full-back’s shot was also well blocked by a barricade of yellow.
Parkway hit back with a decent opportunity despite Hanwell’s sharp start when Tom Dean latched onto Michael Williams’ cross from the left wing, but the full-back couldn’t guide his header goalward from a decent position.
A speculative effort from Ryan Brett just past the half-way line 22 minutes in, gave a modest hint that it wouldn’t be Parkway’s day as the midfielders ambitious shot sailed well wide of the post.
These hints became reality five minutes later as Dean missed his header following a cross from the right wing, allowing Carr to bring the ball down and fire his effort past McCormick via an unfortunate deflection from Dean to make it 0-1 to the visitors.
Parkway seemed to lose their way completely upon conceded the opener.
A loose ball out of the back from Taylor Scarff on the 30-minute mark fell to Carr – the full-back then whipped the ball into Edwards, who held off Shane White and offloaded to Nditi, but again the right-back’s low, fierce shot was blocked.
Hanwell’s front line had the home side on the ropes, with striker Alfie Pendlebury in particular causing the back four huge problems with his bullish runs.
The number nine barged his way down the left wing before cutting back to Edwards, who swivelled and clipped the crossbar with guided left footed effort from a tight angle.
The away side’s dominance soon paid off as Carr add both his and his side’s second, drilling a smooth strike into the bottom right corner off the post to make it 0-2 before half time.
Despite changes in the second half, Parkway remained much the same as the physicality of Hanwell continued to get the better of the Yellows.
McPhee’s side weren’t able to produce the entertaining attacking football the Bolitho faithful had been accustomed to in recent weeks, and in truth Parkway never really looked like scoring.
Hanwell had two big chances to further their lead in almost identical fashion but in both circumstances. Nditi’s shot’s from the right hand side were saved by McCormick and the rebounds were smashed over the bar by Joseph Waight who had the goal at his mercy on both occasions.
After coming on for the final minutes of the game, McPhee said: “Everyone of us is feeling pretty low, pretty disappointed for different reasons really.”
“Looking back at the game in the first 20 minutes we gave a good account of ourselves, moved the ball nicely and with good energy, but key moments in the game have an impact on the flow. They scored a goal against the run of play to an extent and that rocked us.
“It was disappointing to see the boys withdrew a little bit and got almost unnerved by that and that meant we weren’t able to get pressure higher up the pitch which gave them more space. Testament to Hanwell, they had a game plan, they executed it and they made life difficult for us.”
After a bad day at the office, Parkway will need to pick themselves up and dust themselves off as ahead of Saturday’s trip to title chasing AFC Totton.
