Parkway Get Off the Mark with Deserved Win at Chertsey
Chertsey Town vs Parkway | Match ReportPlymouth Parkway resumed Southern Premier South league action with their first visit to the capital this season to face Chertsey Town. The hosts gained promotion last season by comfortably winning the Isthmian South Central title gaining 100 points from a 31-8-1 record (one point deducted). They were currently unbeaten at home in league matches for 23 games which stretched back to the end of the 22/23 season.
This was not Parkways first visit to Alwyns Lane to play the Curfews, they previously met here in January 2010 in the 4th round of the FA Vase as a member of the SW Peninsula league. It was not a day to remember for Parkway who succumbed to a 6-0 defeat.
More recently, in 2019, Chertsey have won the FA Vase at Wembley beating Cray Valley PM in a London derby in front of 42,962 fans! There were a few less fans in attendance for the visit of Parkway but the weather was fine as the visitors went about seeking their first league win of the season at the eleventh attempt.
On the eve of the match, a further addition to the Parkway squad was announced with the signing of teenage forward Kieran Edworthy, the son of former Pilgrim Marc Edworthy. This was the fourth addition to the squad in a week following Harry Lee, Jack Endacott and Frankie Monk. The starting eleven were unchanged from Tuesday.

Full Match Report
On a fine day on an excellent pitch, Parkway began well looking comfortable and in the third minute, Mitch Beardmore dispossessed the home left back and put in a telling cross which was well defended. On 8 minutes, a long diagonal ball from Shane White was well controlled by Dylan Jones who then played in Jack Endacott who shot over and wide. Within a minute, Chertsey mustered their first attack with forward Jack Mazzone working his way inside the box, but Harry Lee was alert in the Parkway goal and his challenge saved the situation.
On 10 minutes, there was a big penalty shout when Beardmore was seemingly brought down in the box but only a corner was given which came to nothing. On 12 minutes Beardmore again was causing problems and as he rounded the keeper, he was clipped and may have gained a penalty had he went down but he tried to stay on his feet and the ball just outran him. A cross from Callum Hall followed shortly after with Dylan Jones shooting over the bar.
On 15 minutes, good interplay between Rio Garside, Monk and Beardmore saw the latter’s shot from 15 yards deflected past the post for a corner. On 17 minutes an Endacott break down the left drew the home keeper Jack Smith out of position and the cross to Beardmore at the near post was just intercepted by a last-ditch challenge when it looked a certain goal.
On 19 minutes, White slotted in Dylan Jones who shot from a central position from 20 yards forcing Smith to dive to his right to turn the ball round the post for a corner. It had been all one-way traffic up to now with Parkway having nothing to show for it but they then almost got hit with a sucker punch when Chertsey broke away on 24 minutes and Luke Robertson volleyed into the net from 10 yards but fortunately for Parkway was flagged offside.
Normal business resumed with a long jinking run from Tom Dean into the box on 26 minutes, but he couldn’t quite find the shot with the ball getting stuck under his feet.
Chertsey came close on 28 when Rio Garside lost the ball and good interplay from Conor Lee and Jack Mazzone led to White intercepting, but keeper Lee needed quick reactions to stop the own goal deflecting it for a corner. On 31 minutes Endacott picked up a yellow. It was a dubious foul, but the card may have been for dissent.
Parkway continued in the ascendency and on 33 minutes they were rewarded for their endeavours when a brilliant run from Beardmore beating several defenders saw him heavily brought down in the box and the referee having no doubt in awarding the penalty. Shane White continued his spot-kick reliability on 35 minutes tucking the ball away low down inside the right-hand post to put Parkway ahead at last.
On 38 minutes Endacott was brought down just outside the home box by Conor Lee who had ran back the length of the pitch with only one boot on! The resultant free kick from 22 yards just outside the corner of the box was scored directly by Tom Dean for his first goal for the club tucking it just inside the near post. It looked a carbon copy of Worthing’s second goal against Parkway last week. The 2-0 scoreline was now getting somewhere near what Parkway had deserved.
On 40 minutes, yet another mazy run from Beardmore ended with a fine drive just over the bar. A rare dangerous attack from Chertsey on 41 saw a back heel flick over Harry lee look to cause problems but the offside flag rescued Parkway. Immediately after Mazzone was almost in again but Lee just managed to intercept.
On 45 minutes a raid down the left by Jones should have seen Beardmore played in for what would have been a certain 3-0 but he was just unable to find him. In the three added minutes, Chertsey had a speculative attempt on goal with Lee blazing a free kick well over from 30 yards.
A totally dominant Parkway first-half performance and Chertsey must have wondered how they were just two behind. Beardmore in particular had been unplayable but the whole team were on their game.
Chertsey made a change at the interval with Louis Birch being replaced by Oliver McCoy. A very low sun had potential to cause Harry Lee difficulty in the second half.
A reaction was expected and indeed, Chertsey immediately took control. On 49 minutes, Conor Lee cross into the six-yard box saw a shot turned away for a corner by Harry Lee. The corner was part saved by lee before being cleared by the defence.
Parkways first attack of the half on 52 minutes saw a good effort from Jones forcing a fine diving save but was flagged offside anyway. Shortly after, McCoy broke into the Parkway box from the right and shot low just past the far post. Chertsey were now enjoying their first good spell of the match.
On 54 minutes Oliver McCoy struck the bar from an angle, but Mazzone was on hand to head the rebound home from two yards to make the score 1-2. A further effort from McCoy two minutes later saw his shot from 30 yards easily saved by Lee.
Parkway had their first attempt of the second half on target on 61 minutes, but Beardmore’s header did not trouble Smith. On 64, another effort came from McCoy from 25 yards was comfortably saved by Lee.
A double substitution by Chertsey on 66 minutes saw Lee and Montague replaced by Degand and Flatman with Parkway introducing Kieran Edworthy for his debut for Carlo Garside. Play now become a bit disjointed and even which suited Parkway. Duffy collected a yellow card for Chertsey on 72 minutes for dissent. James Watts-Barciela then replaced Monk for the visitors.
On 76 minutes Barciela was hacked down when breaking away from the half-way line which resulted in a yellow for Luke Robertson and visiting manager Chris McPhee but a red for the tackler Oliver McCoy leaving Chertsey with ten for the remaining 14 minutes. On 79 minutes, Collins replaced Mason for Chertsey and Will Armstrong came on for Callum Hall who had put a good shift in as always.
Parkway had now regained control, and they looked the most likely to score again. Tobias Little came on for Ridgely on 83 minutes for the home side. A great chance to put the game to bed was lost on 85 minutes when a low cross from Dean somehow seen Jones fail to connect for a certain goal.
A double Parkway substitution followed on 87 minutes with Wragg on for Jones, and Price for Rio Garside. On 88, a dangerous through ball saw Parkway keeper Lee racing 30 yards out to clear with his head. The following minute saw Luke Robertson pick up a yellow for the hosts.
Eight added minutes ensued and a good run from Watts-Barciela on 90+1 seen him dispossessed in the box. Wragg then had an effort from the left side easily saved.
But there were a couple of scares to come for Parkway. One of these seen a cross to unmarked Mazzone at the far post waiting to be put away but his header just cleared the crossbar when it appeared easier to score.
The final chance fell to Parkway when Wragg was brought down 30 yards out and the shot from Dean saw the keeper having to turn the ball over the bar.
An excellent first-half performance from Parkway where they should have been out of sight and a strong fight-back in the first 20 minutes of the second half by Chertsey. The sending off made things easier for the visitors but there was still an opportunity or two at the death for Chertsey. Overall, a very deserved three points, long overdue. The fans, players and management celebrated wildly on the final whistle, and it was a happy coach journey home.
Parkway move up one place to 20th but still sit 5 points from safety due to Winchester winning. Another good performance will be needed on Tuesday when they visit high-flying Dorchester who sit in the final play-off position.
