Crunch time is upon the Southern Prem as Parkway tackle the final furlong
Winchester City vs Parkway | Match PreviewBy Jack Hobbs
Plymouth Parkway will be hoping to all but secure their status in the Southern League Premier South as they head to Winchester City on Saturday.
The Yellows ended a run of two successive losses with a 3-1 win at Bolitho Park against a struggling Poole Town thanks to goals from Shane White, Tom Dean and Matt Wright.
“We’re looking forward to it”, said Parkway boss Chris McPhee ahead of Saturday’s fixture.
“It’s an opportunity for us to go play on 3g again and try and utilize our use of the ball a little bit more than some of our previous games on grass.
“It was important for us to get a good, solid performance and result last Saturday, to rebuild that confidence, get players back on the score sheet, and try and build that confidence and belief.
“It certainly relieves a little bit of pressure going into the last five games. If we’d have lost against Poole, we would be a point ahead of them with Poole going to Marlow and us going to Winchester.
“It just makes all those games that a little bit nervier, that a little bit tighter, and sometimes can affect performances, but obviously picking up that win and extending that gap back to seven points again psychologically is fantastic for us and the players be going into Saturday full of confidence having picked up that win.
“If we can pick up three points, I think it’ll be a fantastic step towards planning for next season and looking into next season.
“I would imagine that we’re not a million miles away from mathematically being safe if we can pick up three points on Saturday.”
Parkway lost the reverse fixture to 18th placed Winchester back in late August, falling to a 0-3 defeat at Bolitho and McPhee is determined to avoid a repeat of the result.
“That result was very much in the early stages of our season when we were playing some good football, but just not taking our chances, not capitalizing from possession.
“This might sound weird, but I think they had two shots and scored three goals – we conceded an own goal and they scored two on the break.
“We dominated with possession and played some really good stuff. You come out at the end of it losing 3-0. It’s a hard one to take, but we’ve come a long way from those performances and from those games.
“We’re playing better football, with more variety in our game, the players know their jobs inside out and defensively we’re becoming more and more resilient especially around set pieces, and I think that they score a set piece or two against us in that game.
“We’ve shown that we’ve improved in those key areas of the game. We highlighted to the players on Saturday, the importance of us being more competitive and brighter in transition, both winning possession and losing possession, because those are going to be really key against the sides in and around us in the bottom six or seven – those are going to be key moments of the game.
“We’ll put a plan together to make sure that we’re prepared for how they’re going to play, and also so we’re aware of some potential areas we might be able to exploit.”
A slight negative from last Saturday’s victory is that Parkway will be without winger James Watts-Barciela who recently returned from a successful loan spell at Willand Rovers.
“Unfortunately, he (Watts-Barciela) picked up a slight hamstring injury in the first half”, said McPhee.
“He’s probably going to be between two to four weeks, depending how he reacts over the next couple of days. We’re probably looking at a potential return to the squad in the last two or three games of the season.
“It’s just a shame that he had such a successful loan period and he’s not been able to capitalize that (due to injury).”
Currently sat in 14th, a win for McPhee’s side at The Simplyhealth City Ground could see the Yellows rise as high as 11th in the table whereas a loss could drag them right back into the mire.
