Parkway Take a Point from Gosport
Gosport Borough v Parkway | Match ReportPlymouth Parkway resumed Southern Premier League South action with a difficult trip to Gosport Borough on the Solent at their AEI Stadium. The coach route to the stadium differed from previous visits taking us through Lee-on-Solent with lovely views on this clear day of Cowes and the Isle of Wight to our right.
Gosport sat in 14th place in the table but with games in hand on everyone. They have suffered the cancellation of two home matches due to floodlight issues and hence, this match was brought forward one hour to 2pm.
Parkway had only managed one win and one draw against their Hampshire hosts in five previous matches, but recent improved results had the visitors looking to improve this record.
Injury hit Parkway featured two changes from their most recent match, two weeks ago against Swindon Supermarine, with Ewan Griffiths reclaiming the keeper position from Andrew Sowden-Bird after Ewan’s Wales U-19 outing in France, and Kieran Edworthy started in place of top-scorer Dylan Jones who was on a two-week trial at Premiership side Brentford. New striker signing Santino Ohanaka from Exeter City, previously Spurs, was on the bench. With several players still injured, the Parkway squad was somewhat threadbare.

With just 55 seconds on the clock, Tom Dean slid the ball through to Kieran Edworthy in the box but his shot was blocked for a corner by a last-ditch tackle. From the corner, Captain Shane White could only manage a weak header whilst stretching for it which was easily saved by Gosport keeper Adam Parkes, once of Parkway and a firm favourite of ours.
The game then went through a quiet phase before on 7 minutes, Samuel Faniyan produced a good low shot to Griffiths’ right, but the Parkway stopper was equal to it turning it around the post for a corner. The resultant corner was wasted going straight into the side netting.
On 12 minutes, a rare loose pass from Tom Dean enabled Gosport’s’ Harry Lee to break into the box but fortunately cover was there for Parkway.
On 24 minutes, Asher Yearwood and Lee combined well down the left and a long accurate cross found Faniyan who headed back to Harry Kavanagh on the right edge of the box but he could only send his effort well over the bar.
Adam Parkes had to be alert on 26 minutes when a long through ball from Dean looked menacing only for Parkes to dash well out of his box to head clear.
A big chance fell to Gosport on 30 minutes after a long free kick from Daniel Hollands was headed to Yearwood who with time and space to spare, could only slice his shot over and wide from 10-yards. On 34 minutes, Kavanagh broke into the Parkway box on the right and his low hard cross was deflected into the hands of Griffiths.
Harry Lee had been very prominent in the opening half-hour for Gosport in a period which they had the lions share of possession and territory but competent defending by Parkway had restricted them to just two chances. The final 15 minutes of the half saw Parkway take control and create several chances.
On 35 minutes, a long probing run from Mikey Williams beating several defenders and linking well with Mitch Beardmore and Callum Hall received the ball 8-yards out and looked destined to add to his brace of last time out but Parkes was equal to the task saving well low down.
On 37 minutes, good work by James Watts-Barciela on the left forced a corner and this was met by the head of Shane White who couldn’t direct the ball on target whilst under pressure.
On 39 minutes, Parkway once again came close. Good interplay between Edworthy, Carlo Garside and Watts-Barciela down the right saw the latter force a good save by Parkes low down to his right with Edworthy blasting the rebound over the bar.
Good build-up play by Rio Garside on 42 minutes led to a 25-yard effort from Jack Endacott which was comfortably saved. Then at the other end in the two added minutes, Charlie Wassmer tried a speculative effort from 40-yards, but it was straight at Griffiths who easily gathered.
Parkway began the second half like they ended the first and on 47 minutes Watts-Barciela beat one defender but his shot from 20-yards sailed well over the bar.
On 49 minutes a free kick was awarded against Hall and the delivery into the box was met by a flick-header from danger man and top-scorer Dan Wooden but could only be directed straight to Griffiths.
Good play on 52 minutes between Faniyan, Yearwood and Faniyan again seen the latter curl a superb effort only for Griffiths to save well pushing it away at full stretch.
On 54 minutes Endacott penetrated the home defence and was well positioned for either a shot or a pass but dived unnecessarily seeking a penalty and was rightly booked for simulation. Two minutes later a scuffle ensued and both Rio Garside and Gosports Joseph Morrison also saw yellow.
The string of cards continued when on 57 minutes, Callum Hall was bearing down on the penalty area when he was pulled down by Cameron Murray. Tom Dean could only curl the 28-yard free kick wide of the left-hand post shortly after.
On 62 minutes, Gosport threatened after a period of Parkway pressure when Mikey Williams conceded a corner from a cross by Kavanagh. The corner was met with a free header from Morrison who set up Yearwood who half-volleyed just wide from 18-yards.
A double substitution for the hosts on 64 minutes saw Lee and Murray replaced by Jamar Smith and Paul Agbesyi. Gosport were enjoying a good spell of their own now and a dangerous cross from Kavanagh on 65 minutes was very well gathered by Griffiths under considerable pressure.
The main danger man for Gosport all day had been winger Samuel Faniyan, a big strong skilful player and on 68 minutes he again fed Yearwood just outside the box, but his 20-yard shot was blocked.
On 70 minutes, Edworthy was replaced by Ohanaka for his Parkway debut. Faniyan caused further problems for Parkway on 76 minutes when cutting in from the right he was brought down just outside the side of the box. The cross from Kavanagh was headed just wide of the far post by Yearwood.
Faniyan was booked for dissent following a stoppage for a head injury to Carlo Garside. On 83 minutes, Gene Price replaced Watts-Barciela for Parkway.
On 87 minutes, Faniyan caused a scare for the visitors when he broke on the left and came in onto his right-foot and unleashed a shot well saved by Griffiths but his parry fell to Yearwood who shot just wide when well-placed.
In the six added minutes, man of the match for Gosport, Faniyan was replaced by Alfie Stanley. Ohanaka then marked his 20 minute appearance with a yellow card for kicking the ball away. The final play of the match saw a weak effort from Gene Price from 25-yards sail well over the bar.
A goalless draw was a fair reflection of the match with defences largely on top with Mikey Williams and Shane White particularly excelling for Parkway. Despite rival teams winning, Parkway should be well pleased with the point gained which sees them remain in 20th place four points from safety.
Parkway now have a further two weeks off due to their scheduled opponents Hanwell Town being involved in the FA Trophy next Saturday. Next up will be another trip to Hampshire to face Sholing in Southampton on Dec.14th. The next home match will be the attractive fixture against second-placed Gloucester City on Dec 21st.
