Full Match Report
Parkway got off to the perfect start by taking the lead in the 2nd minute. Joe Wragg’s shot was pushed away by Ryan Clarke in the home goal with a handball being spotted by the referee with Shane White confidently despatching the spot kick.
They almost doubled their lead on 4 minutes with Callum Hall cutting in from the left forcing a save with his legs from Clarke. That’s about as good as got for Parkway as the hosts began to dominate with the match turning into a rout within the next 10 minutes.
On 5 minutes Jacob Bancroft cut in from the left curling his effort narrowly wide before the hosts drew level on 11 minutes with Bancroft’s low cross from the left being turned into the bottom corner by Ellis Watts. Exploiting the wide areas to good effect Hungerford quickly doubled their lead on 15 minutes with the unmarked Joe Shepherd glancing home a close range header after a dangerous cross from the right by Louis McGory.
With the Parkway back line yet again exposed and space opening up in midfield, Hungerford went further ahead in the 17th minute with the dangerous Bancroft creating havoc on the left and crossing to Watts in acres of space who fired home low into the bottom corner. With Parkway struggling to gain any possession in midfield and the hosts threatening with every attack, they increased their lead and effectively sealed the game on 21 minutes with Bancroft again causing problems on the left playing a neat one two with Dawid Regula who finished smartly from close range with his 1st goal for the club.
Hungerford continued to dominate from front to back with Parkway looking shell shocked, Despite trying to compete they were invariably second best in midfield with the hosts winning the physical battles with their constant pressing and stretching play. On 23 minutes a rare break forward saw Parkway force a corner after Hall’s cross had been blocked. Hungerford continued to look strong going forward with Parkway being continually stretched at the back and vulnerable in the wide areas. Hungerford remained relatively untested at the back however on 31 minutes a strong run along the left by Dylan Jones saw his deep cross cleared away with the hosts breaking away at pace to once again threaten with their attack this time halted by the Parkway defence.
However on 38 minutes they did forge further ahead with Bancroft again the architect racing clear along the left and crossing to the edge of the 18 yard area where the highly impressive Watts turned and shot low into the corner to complete a superb 27 minute hattrick. To their credit Parkway kept working hard against the odds and pulled a goal back in the first of 3 added minutes with Mitch Beardmore looping home a header at the far post from a free kick wide on the right.
A harrowing half for Parkway who, after starting so well, quickly became overwhelmed by a rampant Hungerford who were physically and mentally stronger all over the pitch. Although Parkway tried their best and competed as well as they could, they had no answer to the strength, power and physicality of the hosts who thoroughly deserved their lead.
Parkway made 2 changes at the break with Matt Wright and James Watts-Barciela replacing Wragg and Armstrong. Any thoughts Parkway had of getting back into the game were quickly dispelled with Hungerford’s first attack of the half on 48 minutes seeing Watts break clear unchallenged with his shot poorly defended and Regula hammering home the loose ball from close range.
With play becoming a little more even probably due to the hosts now playing within themselves and with less intensity, Parkway began to create more forward momentum and on 53 minutes clawed a goal back with the energetic Hall doing well to win a challenge in midfield and set up Jones who curled a 25 yard effort into the top corner from wide on the left. Watts-Barciela then drove in from the right with his angled drive saved low down by Clarke but it was the hosts who restored their 4 goal lead on 59 minutes. A Watts free kick on the left found central defender Baboucarr Jarra unmarked who headed home from around 10 yards.
Hungerford made their 1st change on 62 minutes with the outstanding and almost unplayable Watts replaced by Henry Spalding. Hall then saw yellow on 65 minutes as he continued to show good energy and combativeness in midfield against considerable odds. Hungerford continued to dominate with Parkway making little progress going forward with McGory heading narrowly over on 69 minutes.
Parkway did occasionally manage to create a little bit of forward momentum but lacked penetration in the final third with the hosts defence in control and comfortable. Hungerford made a triple substitution on 74 minutes with Bancroft, Regula and Brad Hooper coming on for by Zidan Akers, Tahjae Anderson and Alefe Santos with Gene Price replacing Beardmore for Parkway shortly after. It didn’t take long for the host’s substitutes to make their mark with Anderson and Akers combining well on 82 minutes with the latter unmarked and unchallenged racing clear to slot in off the post past the exposed Ewan Griffiths. Parkway then made their final changes with Williams and Hall replaced by Koerner and Callum Rose.
Tom Dean saw yellow on 86 minutes in a moment of frustration with the hosts having the final say with their 9th goal in the 88th minute with Ramarni Medford-Smith firing home after more poor Parkway defending with the visitors undoubtedly relieved to hear the final whistle shortly after.
A harrowing experience for Parkway who on the day were poor collectively and individually and despite taking an early lead were comprehensively and deservedly beaten by a superior side in all areas. Whilst the effort was generally there, the quality and organisation weren’t and the management will have a tough task in the limited time available rebuilding confidence which will have been severely dented by this performance and result before next week’s two tough fixtures. 10th placed Poole Town who drew 1-1 with Walton and Hersham today are the hosts on Tuesday with the long away trip at the weekend in the FA Cup to step 4 Isthmian League side Sittingbourne who beat fellow step 4 side Kingstonian 4-1 in the FA Trophy today.
