Both Plymouth Parkway and Tiverton Town currently occupy the bottom two places of the Pitching In Southern Premier South Division, and both Devon sides prepare for a Bank Holiday Monday showdown.

After defeat on the opening day, Parkway showed encouraging signs on their travels against Gloucester City and Havant & Waterlooville, but their hard work would be undone as individual errors gifted Winchester City a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon. The game was effectively over as a contest at the half-hour mark as Tommy Wright completed his hat-trick for the Citizens. The defeat would be Parkway’s third of the season and their second at home, and in both outings at Bolitho, the Yellows have conceded three goals.

For Macca and his side, they have the chance to put that right on Monday afternoon, as the quick Bank Holiday turnaround will see them make the short trip to the Ian Moorcroft Stadium. In his post-match interview, the Parkway boss expressed his desire for his players to take ownership and match the work rate of their opponents, and a fiercely contested Devon derby will demand just that!

For Tiverton, who sit bottom only by goal difference, are now on a two-game unbeaten run and will no doubt use home comforts to their advantage on Monday afternoon. Their start to the season began with a 6-0 defeat in Wales against Merthyr Town as former Tivvy player Kane Simpson bagged a hat-trick. A positive 1-1 draw against Dorchester followed, but that slight momentum was curtailed with defeat at home to newly promoted Chertsey Town and most recently, a 2-0 defeat to Bracknell Town on Saturday afternoon at Bottom Meadow.

Parkway heads to Ladysmead with both Exeter City loanees Mitchell Beardmore and Tom Dean unavailable. Callum Rose limped off in the defeat to Winchester City and both he and Alex Cairo will face late fitness tests before the squad is finalised. One good piece of news is that Callum Hall came off the bench during Saturday’s game unscathed and will look to force himself into the manager’s plans for Monday.

It’s early in the season, but this all-Devon fixture could be seen as an early six-pointer for both sides.

Ladysmead played host to a thrilling Bank Holiday Monday fixture this time last season with Parkway racing into a 2-0 goal lead before having two men sent off as Tiverton equalised at the death in a frantic second half. On Boxing Day, the two sides met, and it was Matt Wright who returned the last-minute compliment with a bullet header to rescue a point and 1-1 draw for Parkway.
