Parkway made the worst possible start going behind on 4 minutes. An under hit back pass from Callum Rose saw Trevor Caborn block under pressure Luke McCormick’s rushed clearance and roll a pass into Tommy Wright who slotted into the empty net from around 10 yard for an easy finish.

Parkway failed to react positively with the visitors looking sharp and motivated with Wright again breaking free with his shot on 6 minutes being saved low down by McCormick. On 8 minutes Rose then picked up an early yellow card for a challenge just outside the 18-yard area with Parkway managing to clear the free kick at the second attempt.

Winchester continued to dictate the pace of the game, controlling the midfield area with Parkway unable to gain any quality possession or momentum with Wright again in the action firing narrowly over on 10 minutes. Parkway did manage to break forward on 15 minutes with Dylan Jones going clear along the left only to lack composure and fire an overhit cross which lacked precision and direction.

Winchester continued to dominate play in all areas playing at a high tempo with the pace and power of Luke Chalwell and Caborn putting the Parkway backline under constant pressure with another Parkway error seeing them fall further behind on 20 minutes.

Ryan Brett conceded possession under pressure in central midfield allowing Wright to surge forward unchallenged and cheekily chip McCormick from around 25 yards with his effort bouncing down off the bar and over the line with Chalwell following in to nod home just to make sure.

Parkway made the occasional foray forward but were generally unable to penetrate a solid Winchester defence. Winchester continued to dominate midfield, absorb any rare periods of pressure and play on the counter with Parkway creating little and generally second best physically in all areas.

On 24 minutes the dangerous Caborn cut in from the right curling his effort narrowly wide of the left-hand post as Winchester continued to threaten.

Parkway almost reduced the deficit on 25 minutes with their first effort on target. A break along the left saw Tom Dean ghost in at the near post to meet a low cross with Luke Cairney in the visitor’s goal doing well to block the effort at the expense of a corner.

Despite this rare Parkway attempt the visitors continued to threaten and on 27 minutes they again broke clear with Caborn’s shot from around 15 yards being pushed way by McCormick and cleared to safety. It was no real surprise when Winchester increased their lead further on the half hour.

A Parkway attack on the right broke down after again losing possession and a long ball into the Parkway half saw Wright racing clear with Rose in pursuit with Wright completing his hattrick after twisting and turning Rose just outside the 18 yard area and slotting calmly past the onrushing McCormick from around 12 yards with a composed finish.

Rose who appeared to have picked up an injury just prior to the 3rd goal was unable to continue with James Watts-Barciela replacing him on 36 minutes. The visitors almost bagged their 4th goal on 37 minutes with Wright shooting narrowly over after Parkway once again conceded possession in a dangerous area. Winchester continued in the ascendancy into the 2 minutes of added time with Parkway no doubt relieved to hear the half time whistle.

A poor half from Parkway who were second best all over the pitch to a well organised and competent Winchester whom were able to control large parts of the game. Parkway seemed unable to respond individually or collectively to conceding the early goal, with individual errors contributing to all 3 goals. Winchester were quick to capitalise on those errors in dominating play and finishing clinically when given the opportunities.

Matt Wright replaced Rio Garside at the break to provide a focal point in the Parkway attacking third in a clear attempt to put some pressure on the visitor’s backline. Parkway forced an early corner on the right after a neat exchange between Taylor Scarff and Dean.

Parkway started the second half in a more determined manner having more possession with Winchester seemingly content to sit deep, absorb pressure, put men behind the ball to protect their 3-goal lead and rely on counter attacking to exploit the space beyond the Parkway midfield.

Cairney saw yellow on 49 minutes presumably for words to the officials. Parkway now began to show some attacking intent with Dean glancing a header just wise from a deep cross from the left on 51 minutes.  Cairney then did well to gather a dangerous cross from the right from Dean who was beginning to have more influence on the game along the right.

Parkway continued to press with Carlo Garside working hard in midfield, prompting and probing looking to create openings with Dean and Watts-Barciela combining well on the right on 63 minutes crossing to Matt Wright who rose unchallenged to head narrowly over the bar when well placed.

Winchester then counter attacked on 65 minutes with Chalwell going clear only to shoot well over. Watts-Barciela then saw his shot on the turn deflected for a corner as Parkway came more into the game without unduly troubling the visitor’s solid backline. Winchester continued to threaten on the break and on 68 minutes Tommy Wright and Ik Hill linked well with the latter forcing a fine save from McCormick with the resultant corner coming to nothing.

Parkway continued to look to apply pressure but were unable to create too many clear-cut chances with Winchester continuing to defend strongly. Hattrick hero Tommy Wright was replaced by Ollie Balmer on 70 minutes with the substitute quickly into the action firing just over on 72 minutes after Parkway yet again lost possession in midfield. Cairney then pushed a Matt Wright header behind for a corner after more good build up play along the right.

A lacklustre first half display by Parkway who had no answer to the visitor’s dominance and after conceding an early goal to an individual error were unable to lift themselves physically or mentally to the challenge and force their way back into the game.

Further errors gifted Winchester the initiative and the game was effectively over by half time. An improved second half display and more time in possession from Parkway was as much to do with the visitor’s game plan of containment, counter and protecting what they had as it was Parkway’s own attacking intent with the visitors continuing to control the pace of the game and running out deserved winners.

Parkway now have just 48 hours to regroup and recharge before heading to Tiverton Town on Monday in a battle of the bottom 2 clubs neither of whom have won a game and both with just a single point to show from their 4 games played. A vastly improved performance will be required.
