Full Match Report
Parkway made a sharp start creating early pressure with their patient build up play from the back with new signings Ryan Brett and Carlo Garside along with Callum Hall dominant and controlling the pace in midfield.
However, it was the visitors who created the 1st chance in the 5th minute with on loan Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Zak Baker doing well to claw away an angled cross from Dan Warre. Parkway continued to dominate the early stages with their passing and moving football with Dylan Jones seeing a shot blocked on 8 minutes after a free kick on the left was not cleared.
The next attack along the left saw good work from Jones who cut inside and create a shooting opportunity with Carlo Garside pouncing on the loose ball and send in a rising drive from around 18 yards which Simon Grant in the visitor’s goal did well to palm away to safety. Parkway continued to dominate possession, moving the ball from the back at pace and looking to exploit the wide areas.
On 12 minutes more slick build up play wide on the left saw the ball played into Brett whose long-range effort was tipped over the bar by Grant at full stretch.
Parkway continued in the ascendancy with the visitors forced to defend deep and in numbers whilst offering little threat in the final third. Brett fired wide when well placed in the 16th minute before the constant Parkway pressure finally paid off in the 19th minute with a well worked team goal which their enterprising play deserved.
New captain Shane White advanced forward from deep releasing Mikey Williams who continued forward along the left and played in Jones whose low cross from close to the bye line was glanced home from close range under pressure by young Exeter City loanee Mitchel Beardmore.
Parkway continued to look the more threatening, controlling the midfield exchanges with a range of quality passing creating several of half chances which the visitors did well to defend. On 28 minutes a long ball into the 18-yard area saw Beardmore direct a looping header goalward comfortably gathered by Grant.
Parkway continued their free-flowing football stretching the visitors back line and they almost doubled their lead on 36 minutes with Carlo Garside sending a diving header narrowly wide after more good link up play and a well-directed cross from the right. Basingstoke then created their first meaningful period of possession in the final third forcing Parkway on to the defensive.
From a corner on the left they drew level in the 38th minute after some questionable defending by Parkway. The corner delivered deep across the 18-yard area found Simon Dunn climbing above a Parkway defender to send his header into the 6 yard box where Warre poked home the loose ball from close range through a crowd of bodies.
Basingstoke continued to come more into the game and after Parkway had sloppily given the ball away in midfield, Robbie Gallagher broke clear with Jones doing well to match his run and block the cross at the expense of another corner. Again, Dunn rose highest to the deep corner with Parkway managing to clear on this occasion.
With Parkway losing their earlier momentum and not able to play at the same tempo, the visitors finished the half the stronger and in the 42nd minute Alfie Bridgeman rifled an angled drive from around 20 yards narrowly over.
An entertaining half with Parkway the far better side for the first 35 minutes playing some eye-catching football and thoroughly deserving their lead. Only some profligate finishing and smart goalkeeping kept the score line at 1-0 however the inability to properly defend a corner allowed Basingstoke back into the game and it was they who finished the half the stronger.
Parkway made a couple of positional changes at the break with Hall dropping from central midfield to left back and Williams moving from left back to the right flank. Basingstoke started the half the stronger with Baker doing well to gather a dangerous cross from Bridgeman on 47 minutes with Parkway responding and Hall and Jones linking well to cross to Beardmore whose header flashed narrowly wide.
On 52 minutes a last-ditch block by White denied the visitors a shot finding the target as the visitors now began to dominate the game. Both sides rang the changes around the hour mark with James Watts-Barciela replacing Williams for Parkway with the visitors making a double change with Jonathan Efedje and George Reid replacing Bridgeman and Warre respectively.
On 62 minutes a Basingstoke free kick on the left created a couple of close-range headers with Baker doing well to stay strong under pressure to make a good save.
An awful mix up between Baker and Taylor Scarff gifted the visitors the lead on 63 minutes. Attempting to play out from the back an under hit back pass allowed Efedje to pounce and roll the loose ball into the empty net with arguably his first touch since coming off the bench.
This seemed to unsettle Parkway with Basingstoke now dominating completely and looking dangerous with every attack. Only a superb save on 67 minutes by Baker from a powerful drive by Reid prevented the visitors going further ahead. Parkway were now being outmuscled and outfought in midfield and offering little in attack with Rio Garside replacing Alex Cairo on 69 minutes. Basingstoke continued to control the pace and tempo of the game seeing another effort blocked by some backs to the wall defending on 69 minutes.
The visitors made further changes on 70 and 75 minutes with Paul Hodges replacing Ben Cook and Rudy Appiah-Allen on for Dunn. With the pace of the game dropping and Basingstoke content to slow the game to contain,
Liam Ferdinand replaced Gallagher on 81 minutes and made an almost immediate impact with his close-range shot hitting the inside of the post and being cleared to safety.
Approaching full time Parkway managed to create a bit of pressure winning a free kick centrally just outside the penalty area with some claiming it should have been a penalty. They almost grabbed a late equaliser from the kick with Tom Deans effort smacking against the cross bar and rebounding away to safety with Grant well beaten. Sam Joce replaced Carlo Garside for Parkway in the 90th minute and as they pushed forward in the 8 minutes of stoppage time searching for an equaliser, they left themselves exposed at the back with the visitors sealing the game in the 92nd minute by breaking quickly with Ferdinand cutting the ball back to the unmarked Appiah-Allen who calmly slotted home from close range. Max Smith then saw a long-range effort sail narrowly over as the visitors comfortably saw the game out with Curtis Angell picking up a late yellow card.
After completely dominating the first 35 or so minutes with a pleasing style of play and taking an early lead, Parkway began to lose their way after conceding the equaliser and were not the same side after the break. Basingstoke became stronger physically as the game progressed winning the majority of 50/50 situations and after being gifted their 2nd goal, dominated the rest of the game.
Very early days for the new management team and their embryonic squad with today’s game giving them plenty of food for thought and lessons to be learnt. Parkway now travel to Gloucester City on Tuesday with the hosts, who were relegated from the National League South last season, coming from 3-0 down at half time to draw 3-3 at Taunton Town today.
