Parkway Youth Round Up
1 - Plymouth Parkway Colts 1 - Chaddlewood Minors
Parkway went into the fixture looking to maintain their 100% record in this season’s league campaign. For the first time this season, the Yellows were made to work hard, and an early goal could not be found with Minors restricting the dangerous Parkway attack to half chances.
Parkway’s number 1 Jack would have to be alert and made some smart stops throughout the first half. The first real chance of the game fell to the hosts when a freekick was given by the official just outside the box for a loose challenge. The Chaddlewood player stepped up and struck the ball, deflecting into the far side of the net and wrong footing the keeper. Parkway huffed and puffed to get back into the game with the final ball not quite finding the intended target.
A big half time team talk from the management team would see Parkway reappear looking fired up for the 2nd half. It wasn’t long before the Yellows levelled after brilliant play by Maison on the right wing who got to the by-line before the defender and produced a brilliant cross for Alfie to smash home a volley into the top corner. Surely a goal of the season contender.
It needed something special to get back into the game as Chaddlewood looked strong and resolute at the back. It would become one way traffic after the stunner, but Parkway couldn’t add a killer blow and succumbed to their first draw of the season. It was the first time the young squad had to show their fighting qualities but the way they played the second half showed real character and will serve them well for trickier tests as the season continues.
12 - Plymouth Parkway 0 - Drake Under 10's
Parkway played against a depleted Drake side through COVID and other absences.
Drake are playing a year up and whilst the scoreline was a heavy one, there were some great performances from their players, especially the Goalkeeper who pulled off some magnificent saves. Credit to a great little side who will come again under the great guidance of Lee Pink.
As for the Parkway boys, they maintained recent high standards and moved the ball around nicely. Some great goals scored, the pick of the dozen: a volley from a corner from Henry and a fine low finish from Isaac across the keeper.
The goals were spread throughout the team: Henry x 3 a fine hat trick and eventual MOM. Henry is having a fantastic season. Roman x 3 after shaking off a broken arm that has kept him out for a few weeks but Roman hasn’t forgot where the net is, a fine natural finisher and a great weekends work. Isaac x 2 as mentioned with a couple of tidy finishes, skill in abundance throughout the game. Elijah x 2 guaranteed to get you goals and absolute quality in the game. Jack picked up recent goal scoring form and is a fantastic attacking outlet from LWB. Jake, Mr fantastic, has a great left peg and finished well. Teddy as always is on the move and the first to react, picking up pieces and getting another goal for the tally
Special mentions for those not on the scoresheet who contributed to a dominant team performance. Danon came so close to his first goal of the season but kept the back door shut with super defending. Louis produced an energetic display in midfield and assisted his teammates well. Louie T had a great game in a new position at RWB, covering brilliantly defensively to thwart any attacks. Reece gives his everything and helped keep a clean sheet for the team. Last but by no means least, goalkeeper max kept fine concentration and patience, producing a fantastic save at the death to grab himself a clean sheet! Well, done on a great team effort.
3 - Plymouth Parkway 1 - Hunter's District Girls
Parkway went into this match off the back of a hard-fought contest with Drake in the Qtr. Final of the Cup and sat in 3rd in the league, 3 points behind the girls and 5 points behind Goals with 2 games in hand and knowing a win would move them up into 2nd place and a step closer to the top.
With 2 minutes on the clock, Leo Orford delivered a cross into the Hunters box for Ernie Scott to connect with his head as the ball flew over the bar.
Parkway pushed on again and in the 6th minute Jayden Tranter came close as he put the ball just wide and 2 mins later Tranter came close again and was unfortunate as the ball again, went just wide of the post. The game would be played at a lightning quick pace and in the 18th minute, Max Brockman had great shot only to be saved by the keeper. Moments later, Parkway broke the deadlock through Leo Orford as he got on the end of a corner from Jayden Tranter and slotted the ball home.
The Yellows lost keeper Tye Roberts who was involved in a collision with teammate Alfie Chambers as goal scorer Leo Orford stepped up and replaced Tye in goal, the game stayed at 1-0 until the 34th Minute when Alfie Chamber got on the end of another Jayden Tranter corner to head it home as Parkway went into the break with a two-gaol advantage.
The 2nd half got under way with Tye Roberts going back in goal after his injury. Parkway continued to dominate the early stages of the second half as Brockman would again come close to finding the net. The game was again played at a frantic pace with either side unable to trouble the keepers until midway through the second half as Hunters entered the Parkway area and took a shot only for Tye Roberts to pull off a great save.
Minutes later it was the girls who kept piling on the pressure and were awarded a free-kick just outside the Parkway area. With the keeper’s view being blocked he was unable to get on the end of the freekick and the girls pulled one back.
Hunters kept the pressure on and pushed for the equaliser but were again unable to trouble Tye Roberts who was having a great game despite his injury. Leo Orford, who was having an eventful game with a goal and a stint between the posts would restore Parkway’s advantage and seal the winner as he connected with Brockman’s cross.
With other results in the league, Parkway would close the gap at the top of the table as only two points separate them from the summit with two games in hand. The hard work starts now.
2 - Plymouth Parkway Colts 3 - Plympton Athletic
“Very disappointing result for the team and strangely the exact same outcome as the last time we played Plympton, 2-0 up to then lose 2-3” These were the words from boss Joe Pulley as his side were hit with Déjà vu against Plympton.
Plympton started the game strongly keeping Parkway pinned back for the first 10 minutes as the Athletic midfield shined. The Yellow dug deep and showed resilience and their counter attacking capabilities. They would take the lead against the run of play as Dennis Daw won the ball and played in Connor McKee who finished expertly from close range.
The goal would give the Yellows a much-needed confidence lift, as they started to push Plympton into their own half. Daw would become more involved down the left side of midfield as Athletic struggled to contain him. The Yellows would deservedly add a second before half time as McKee would again find the net and make it 7 goals from 3 games.
The second half would see the game flip completely as Athletic emerged with a more physical approach. The Yellows struggled to get to grips with the new approach from the outset and much like Parkway’s first teams defeat away to Melksham Town, the Yellows squandered a healthy lead as Plympton produced a fine comeback to seal all three points.
After the game, a deflated Joe Pulley would say: “This is the second league game in a row that I feel the other team has outfought us and because of that we have lost both. We must accept that there are teams in this league are tough and aggressive. If we want to be at the top end of this league, we must adapt better to it. I understand we can’t win every tackle or dual, but we need to put 100% effort across the full game. The focus now has to be how we react next week where we have two very tough games. If we can start to stand up to these tough teams a bit better, we have the quality to do well. We have shown this by going ahead in all our defeats. We just need to be more solid individually and as a team to make sure we can start to see games out.
1 - Marjon 2 - Plymouth Parkway
Plymouth Parkway U15 looked to continue their unbeaten start to the season with a tricky home fixture against Marjon. Parkway started the game slowly with Marjon pressing hard and they took a deserved lead in the 11th minute after a through ball was calmly lifted over Parkway’s keeper which hit the post, but the Jons striker was on hand to tap in the rebound.
This was only the second league goal conceded this season and that seemed to kick start a more competitive edge to Parkway’s game and they were level midway through the first half after a great in swinging corner dropped six yards out and was smashed home by Fin Clarke.
On a sticky pitch the game changed shortly after the equaliser when Jack Davidson was shown a straight red card for Parkway after a late lunge on a Marjon midfielder. A little harsh given the circumstances and conditions but Parkway were down to ten for the remainder of the game. Late in the second half, parkway keeper Harry Westlake pulled off an outstanding save down to his right corner from an excellent Marjon free kick, which left the scoreline delicately poised.
The second half was a defining moment for the Parkway boys who after a stern halftime team talk, rolled their sleeves up and produced a great 40 minutes of football with 10 men, dominating possession for large periods and pressing for a winner. The defence were immense and stood firm with Oscar Fallon putting in a man of the match performance, time after time thwarting any counter attacks from Marjon.
The game was competitive throughout with Marjon playing their part with the game heading towards a draw, but parkway forced a number of corners and it was from a corner that Parkway snatched a last minute winner. It was another in swinging corner that fell to the sweet left foot of Ethan Wright who slotted the ball into the far corner, securing a massive 3 points for Parkway who moved from 5th to 2nd in the league. Given the performance of the second half with 10 men, it was nothing more than Parkway deserved.
9 - Plymouth Parkway 2 - Plymstock United
The U18s made it 6 wins from 7 games on Sunday against a very spirited and well organised Plymstock side.
Plymstock would go into the break leading 2-1 and deservedly so. Their dogged spirit and determination to protect their goal was clear for everyone to see as the counterattack was used effectively.
As for the second half, Parkway responded brilliantly and drew level (2-2) almost instantly from a Charlie Castlehouse header. Two mins later, Charlie added to his tally putting away a low cross from Luca Tsinanivas, putting the yellows in front. From there Parkway pushed on and in the 65th minute, Charlie completed his hat trick with a stunning 20-yard strike that nestled into the top corner. Parkway took complete control from there and finished the half with a flourish of goals and brilliant attacking play.
