Parkway Progress in Trophy

Parkway v Banbury United | Match Report

Parkway entered this year’s FA Trophy at the 3rd round qualifying stage by entertaining fellow step 3 side Banbury United from the Southern League Premier Division (Central). The visitors had the distinction of being the lowest scorers in their league with just 7 goals in 9 games and conversely the meanest defence having conceded just 6. Parkway made just one change from last week’s FA Cup victory at Sittingbourne with Ryan Brett returning to replace James Watts-Barciela. Alex Cairo returning from a lengthy injury lay off was named as substitute with Carlo Garside taking part in the warm up still a week or so away from rejoining the fray.

Full Match Report

The game started at a lively pace with Parkway being the first to show with Mitch Beardmore breaking from midfield on 5 minutes and releasing Callum Hall who worked hard to create an opening with his shot being saved by Jack Harding.

Play continued to switch from end to end with Charlie Donaldson’s effort on 7 minutes being blocked with Parkway responding by taking the lead on 10 minutes. A weaving run by Dylan Jones saw him dance past a few defenders into the 18 yard area and cooly place his shot into the bottom corner with Harding well beaten. Parkway almost doubled their lead on 12 minutes with Hall doing well to spot Jones who intercepted a through ball and lacking a bit of composure took an early strike which Harding saved comfortably.

Parkway gradually began to assert their authority in midfield with Hall and Rio Garside busy and Ryan Brett looking composed in front of the back 4. On 19 minutes good work by Tom Dean who combined well with Beardmore along the right crossed to Jones who scuffed his shot narrowly wide when well placed.

Parkway continued to control the tempo of the game and dominate possession using the wide areas to good effect applying pressure to the Banbury backline and creating several chances. On 26 minutes a smart passage of play created an opportunity for Shane White whose shot from around 15 yards smacked against the inside of the right hand post and rebounded into the 6 yard area, eventually being cleared to safety.

Parkway continued to press and on 27 minutes Jones and Hall linked well to release Garside whose shot on the turn from close range was beaten away by Harding for a corner. Banbury were battling well and in a rare counter attack on 29 minutes a neat passage of forward play was halted with Charlie Donaldson straying marginally offside. With the visitors continuing to compete well and enjoying their best spell of the game they drew level on 32 minutes.

Harry Reilly broke clear along the right and delivered a well directed cross into the 18 yard which the Parkway defence were unable to cut out leaving Jaanai Gordon unmarked to swivel and half volley home a clinical finish from around 15 yards for a well taken goal.

Parkway immediately looked to regain control with Hall displaying energy and intensity in midfield and on 34 minutes Dean saw his shot blocked and cleared before they almost regained the lead on 37 minutes. A long diagonal ball from the back by Taylor Scarff picked out Garside wide on the left who slid in Jones whose powerful drive was pushed behind for another corner from which Matt Wright headed narrowly over.

Parkway were not to be denied and their dominance and constant pressure were rewarded in the 40th minute as they regained the lead. A strong run along the right resulted in Dean linking well with Garside who clipped in a clever cross towards the onrushing Mikey Williams who from around 15 yards blasted home a swerving drive with the outside of his left foot into the top left hand corner for a class finish.

With Parkway finishing the half strongly they almost increased their lead on 44 minutes with Williams making a strong run forward and linking well with Wright and Garside with the latter curling an effort narrowly wide.

A solid half by Parkway who generally dictated the pace of the game and dominated possession carving out a good number of chances. Had their finishing been more clinical and they had a bit more luck, the margin of their lead could have been greater. Credit to Banbury who competed well, scored a superb equaliser and were still well in the game at the break.

Parkway started the 2nd half as they finished the 1st and their early pressure saw them increase their lead on 50 minutes. A neat passage of play through central midfield saw Wright release Dean who raced clear unchallenged on the right and roll a cross into the danger area with Jones timing his run to perfection to meet the cross and under pressure from a covering defender, finish neatly from around 6 yards.

On 51 minutes Parkway were forced into a substitution with Corey Koerner replacing the unfortunate Williams who appeared to have picked up an injury. Despite Banbury forcing a corner which came to nothing on 52 minutes Parkway continued to look the more threatening and on 54 minutes a fierce shot from Wright poleaxed Gift Mussa with Parkways strong claim for handball in the block being waved away. Parkway continued to press and create chances with a Jones far post effort blocked with Garside then seeing his effort also blocked and cleared after good build up play between Jones and Hall.

Banbury made a double substitution on 59 minutes with Matt Donaldson and Charlie Donaldson replaced by Matt Ireland and Harvey Westwood. Parkway continued in the ascendancy creating chances for Hall and Dean around the hour mark with the visitor’s defence coming under increasing pressure. However Banbury did manage the occasional counter attack and on 66 minutes Gordon was in the clear but unable to connect with a cross from the right. The same player then fired a free kick over from 30 yards as the tempo of the game began to drop.

Banbury made another change on 68 minutes with Connor Ferguson replacing Tom Cartwright. Westwood who had only been on for around 10 minutes appeared to have picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Neo Dobson. Deans free kick from around 25 yards was easily saved and with Parkway starting to lose their earlier control the visitors reduced the deficit on 72 minutes.

As has been Parkway’s achilles heel often this season, a poorly directed backpass put Ewan Griffiths under pressure allowing Gordon to intercept the ball, round the stranded keeper and set up Ferguson who curled his angled shot into the far corner despite a desperate attempt by Scarff to clear from off the line.

This gave Banbury a lifeline and with Parkway losing their earlier composure, the visitors pushed forward looking for an equaliser with Parkway being forced back and for the first time in the game defending in numbers. Banbury made their final change on 74 minutes with Claudio Dias replacing Archie Hollyhead. Reilly forced a save from Griffiths on 75 minutes with the visitors now looking the more threatening forcing Parkway into some hurried clearances and conceding possession too easily in midfield.

After a jittery 15 minutes, Parkway gradually regained control with Koerner making a strong run forward on 81 minutes winning a free kick wide on the left which was cleared and recycled with Dean and Brett linking to set up Wright who hooked a spectacular effort narrowly wide. Play continued to be evenly contested, switching from end to end in a frantic finish to the game with Banbury winning a free kick on the left on 89 minutes forcing a good save by Griffiths from Dias.

In the 5 minutes of added time Wright was put in the clear but closed down in the 18 yard area and denied a shooting opportunity with the final play seeing Banbury pressing hard for the equaliser but Parkway remaining solid at the back and holding out for a deserved victory.

A keenly contested game, well managed by the referee, with Parkway generally controlling the first half by dominating possession and playing at a high tempo and creating the clearer chances. Banbury however competed well throughout and enjoyed periods of control creating their own pressure particularly towards the end of the second half. Parkway showed both sides of their game with neat and tidy possession based football in the first half with a more resilient display defensively when under pressure in the second. Performances are gradually improving, partnerships forming and confidence growing, however individual errors, particularly at the back, must be eradicated if the current momentum is to be maintained and taken into their league fixtures.

Before resuming their league fixtures at home to AFC Totton on Tuesday 15 October, Parkway’s progress in National competitions continues and they can look forward to Mondays FA Trophy draw with optimism before entertaining National League South (step 2) side Worthing FC in the 4th round qualifying of the FA Cup next Saturday where a win would take them into the 1st round proper with the possibility of being drawn against a League 1 or 2 side.

NOTE:

This report is my last one for the foreseeable future as I’m being admitted to a private hospital in London this Tuesday for heart surgery on Wednesday, NHS funded! Given a choice, I could have had it in Derriford Hospital Plymouth by the same surgeon but would have had to wait 6-8 months. No brainer! Expect to be in hospital for 5-7 days followed by discharge and a 6-8 week recovery period with certain restrictions which include not being allowed to drive. Not sure when I’ll be able to resume my media duties or be able to attend games again but hopefully won’t be too long. Won’t be rushing, wife won’t me let me! I believe a very capable substitute is on the bench warming up as a ready replacement! In the meantime, when possible, I’ll be following all things Parkway (and The Tractor Boys of course) via socials.
