After Historic FA Cup Win, Parkway Aim for FA Trophy Progress
Parkway v Banbury United | Match PreviewBy Mike Parrish
Parkway vs Banbury United
FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round
Saturday, October 5
Bolitho Park – 3pm KO
After a historic weekend in Kent, Plymouth Parkway return home this Saturday to face Southern League Premier Central side Banbury United in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy.
After a gruelling week on the road filled with dramatic highs and lows, Parkway will welcome a return to Bolitho this Saturday. The squad’s three away games produced a staggering 19 goals in total, beginning their journey in the worst possible fashion with a crushing 9-3 defeat against Hungerford Town. A much-improved performance against Poole Town followed but still ended in defeat. However, there was light at the end of the tunnel as the team carved out a slice of history in Kent, reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the very first time with an impressive 3-0 victory over Sittingbourne Town.
The test now for Macca’s men is to see if they can book a place in the First Round Proper of this season’s FA Trophy competition.
The visitors enjoyed a memorable FA Trophy run during the 2022/23 season, reaching the fifth-round proper before bowing out at home to Gateshead. This marked the Puritans’ best performance in the competition, surpassing their previous fourth-round appearances in the 1970/71 and 1973/74 seasons.
This season, new manager Simon Hollyhead has overseen a steady start, with his side sitting 11th in the table after nine games played. United are currently on a five-game winless run, including a defeat to Southern Division One South side Melksham Town in the FA Cup. They will undoubtedly be heading to Devon eager to return to winning ways and begin another memorable FA Trophy campaign.
Parkway fans still cherish memories of their impressive debut in the competition during the 2021/22 season. That historic run included victories over several higher-league teams including Salisbury, Hampton & Richmond Borough, and Dulwich Hamlet – which earned them a fourth-round tie away to National North side Spennymoor Town. The Yellows were just eight minutes from a fifth-round spot, thanks to a first-half strike from Tom Bath, only for Spennymoor to score three late goals and end Parkway’s Wembley dream.
Parkway will again give late fitness tests to Alex Cairo and Carlo Garside ahead of the fixture as they both continue to recover from long-term injuries. Centre-back Callum Rose departed the club earlier this week and Jack Crago remains on-loan at Helston Athletic but Ryan Brett will be available after missing the trip to Kent.
