Hungerford Town vs Parkway
Southern Premier League South
Bulpit Lane
Saturday, September 21
3pm Kick-off
After progression in the FA Cup with a 4-3 win over Southern League Division One South side Westbury United—which ended a run of four home games at Bolitho Park—the Yellows now get back out on the road with a trip to the Crusaders as league action returns this weekend.
With victory over Westbury, Parkway will enter the FA Cup third qualifying round for only the third time in their history. Following the draw on Monday afternoon, the club now knows they must navigate a trip to Kent next weekend, as Isthmian South-East outfit Sittingbourne FC stand in their way of another slice of club history.
Whilst the talk of the town has been the magic of the FA Cup, manager Chris McPhee and his squad will again look to secure their first league win of the season at the eighth attempt, as they prepare for another tough test in Berkshire. Despite plaudits from opposing teams and being in control of several league games this season, Parkway have accumulated just 3 points from draws against Havant & Waterlooville, Tiverton Town, and Taunton Town, leaving the Yellows second bottom after match day seven.
The Crusaders have also struggled to find their footing this season, and their FA Cup campaign came to an end in midweek. A last-minute winner from Winchester City’s Ik Hill in their replay saw Danny Robinson’s men exit the competition. Like Parkway, the Crusaders have delivered promising performances that haven’t yielded the desired results, leaving them with six points from seven league games and hovering just above the relegation zone.
The season began with a 4-1 defeat on the road to newly promoted Chertsey Town, but that was soon wiped out with an impressive 5-2 thrashing of Gosport Borough at Bulpit Lane.
That Bulpit winning feeling continued as Ellis Watt’s 48th-minute goal was enough to see off Taunton Town. However, the winning league feeling would stop there, with the Crusaders now on a four-game losing streak with defeats against AFC Totton, Swindon Supermarine, Wimborne, and Gloucester City. This weekend, Town will look to get their season back on track and capitalize on home advantage.
Parkway head to Berkshire with Mikey Williams returning from his one-match suspension after seeing red against Walton & Hersham. Carlo Garside and Alex Cairo remain on the sidelines, and there will be a late fitness test for Rio Garside, who limped off against Westbury United. Youngsters Gene Price, Corey Koerner, and Will Armstrong could all travel to Berkshire as Macca plots a game plan ahead of the Bulpit test.
Hungerford will look to make home advantage count as they go in search of their first win in five league games, with last season’s result still fresh in their memory. Parkway were on the wrong side of a 7-0 scoreline on the opening day of last season and will be looking to put that result right this weekend. They did play at Bulpit Lane twice last season, as Hungerford accommodated the Yellows during a period of uncertainty. The Crusaders kindly helped Parkway fulfill their quota of home games, and Parkway picked up a huge three points against Swindon Supermarine in their battle for survival last season. The reverse fixture at Bolitho witnessed one of Parkway’s best performances of the season, as Ryan Lane’s strike was the pick of the goals in a 6-2 win at Bolitho.
