Havant & Waterlooville v Parkway | Match Report

With a depleted squad due to injury and unavailability, Parkway travelled to Havant and Waterlooville and still looking for their first point of the season. 3 changes were made from Tuesday’s narrow defeat at Gloucester City with Callum Rose, James Watts-Barciela and Will Armstrong replacing the injured Callum Hall and the unavailable Carlo Garside and Ryan Brett. Armstrong had been signed only 24 hours earlier on a dual registration with Weymouth. Only 4 subs were named one of whom was 16-year-old Gene Price.

Parkway got off to the perfect start taking the lead in the 4th minute. Good early pressure saw them win a corner on the left which was only half cleared with Watts-Barciela reacting quickest to the loose ball and drilling home a low shot from around 10 yards under the body of Ben Dudzinski in the home goal who arguably should have done better in attempting his save. Parkway continued to make the early running with Matt Wright,

Mikey Williams and Dylan Jones linking well on 9 minutes setting up Watts-Barciela whose low shot was well saved. Tom Dean then shot just wide after more good Parkway build up play. On 11 minutes Parkway forced another corner on the right with a free header from Rose flashing narrowly wide.

After withstanding further pressure, the hosts gradually started to get into the game and on 15 minutes should have drawn level with Ryan Seager unable to control the ball at close range with McCormick saving well. A let off for Parkway. Havant now began to dictate the pace of the game creating further scoring opportunities with Seager flashing an effort narrowly wide and Leon Maloney seeing his shot well saved by McCormick.

The hosts continued their patient build up play forcing Parkway to defend deep and play on the counter and on 20 minutes they won a midfield 50/50 challenge with Wright firing narrowly wide from around 25 yards.  The hosts continued to press and dominate possession and on 24 minutes Maloney saw his effort well saved followed by fine defending denying Seager after good build up play from Maloney,

Callum Kealy and Alfy Whittingham. Havant continued to threaten with Parkway working hard, competing well in midfield but being forced on to the defensive for lengthy periods and only occasionally manging to mount a counter attack.

On 34 minutes McCormick did well to save from Nigel Atangana and on 39 minutes Reuben Livesey-Austin saw his close-range effort cleared off the line by some more resolute defending. McCormick was called into action again on 40 minutes this time denying Seager with a save diving to his left at full stretch, From the resultant corner the hosts optimistic claims for a penalty for handball were waved away with the ball being driven straight at a defender from close range. A period of late pressure from Parkway saw a half chance created with Mitchel Beardmore’s low shot being blocked and cleared.

After falling behind early, Havant gradually worked their way back into the game creating numerous chances but were unable to penetrate a solid Parkway back line with central defenders Taylor Scarff and Rose holding firm under sustained pressure. Parkway continued to work hard and compete well all over the pitch just about being able to maintain their slender lead.

Havant started the second half as they had finished the first and on 49 minutes Whittingham flashed an effort across the face of the goal with no one able to get a final touch. Parkway continued to look to play on the break with Dean forcing a corner on the right on 51 minutes as they applied a bit of pressure.

Good build up play along the left found Jones who twisted and turned with his angled shot being saved. On 55 minutes a neat exchange along the left between the hard-working Wright and Williams released Jones at the near post who’s flicked close range effort could only find the side netting.

The hosts continued to build up patiently switching and stretching play as they searched for an equaliser and on 58 minutes McCormick saved well from Whittingham after Seager’s initial shot had been blocked. Parkway made their first change on 61 minutes with Sam Joce replacing Watts-Barciela who had put in a tireless shift using his pace and trickery to good effect.

The hosts constant pressure finally paid off and they drew level on 65 minutes. Another McCormick save went for a corner from which Seager and Maloney linked with the latter working his way inside and firing in a shot which appeared to be deflected off a Parkway arm with the referee indicating advantage and awarding the goal.

Parkway responded well with a breakaway almost straight from the kick off with Williams slotting home at the far post only for the effort to be ruled out by a marginal offside decision. On 69 minutes Williams was again in the action embarking on a mesmerising run from well inside his own half which saw him glide smoothly past several challenges, drive into the 18-yard area only to see his goalbound shot superbly blocked by some last ditch defending. The hosts bounced back almost immediately with Seager seeing his header hit the post on 71 minutes after more good work by Maloney.

Havant made their first change on 72 minutes with Reuben Swann replacing Whittingham followed on 77 minutes by Harver Bradbury replacing Kealey. Parkway then made their second change with Wright, who had created problems for the Havant defence throughout, being replaced by debutant Corey Koerner.

Williams became the first player to see yellow after an innocuous looking challenge wide on the left around halfway as Havant continued to apply pressure with McCormick turning an effort from Swann around the post on 83 minutes. Parkway continued to defend manfully as Havant looked to switch play and stretch the visitors back line with Bradbury then cutting in from the right and firing in a dangerous cross which narrowly evaded Seager. On 88 minutes McCormick did well to gather a corner under considerable pressure as Havant continued to press.

Parkway made their final change on 89 minutes with Price replacing Beardmore with 5 minutes of added time then being indicated. Jones shot just wide in a rare Parkway attack on 90 minutes with Havant then forcing 4 corners on the spin with Parkway somehow managing to withstand the pressure with Armstrong clearing off the line to keep the scores level.

Price then saw yellow for a foul in midfield in the 92nd minute with McCormick once again excelling in the 94th minute to deny Seager’s volley with a superb save which surely saved the game with the referee calling time shortly after.

Considering the paucity of their squad and against a side only relegated from the National League South last season, a resolute, gritty and determined performance from Parkway who although riding their luck at times and being forced to defend for long periods, should be extremely pleased with the outcome and the way they played as they gained their first point of the season at the 3rd attempt.

The team remain a work in progress but again there were glimpses of the style of play of which they are looking to achieve with today their defensive qualities and team spirit coming to the fore coupled with an inspired goalkeeping display which earned them the point.

Next up is a double header Bank Holiday weekend with Winchester City the visitors on Saturday with a short hop up the A38/M5 to Tiverton Town on Monday.
